PolyMet did not consider climate change

PolyMet's proposal does not address climate change in the design of the project’s tailings basin. Duluth for Clean Water commissioned a report by Dr. Tom Myers, an independent hydrogeologist in Reno, NV, to look into risks due to climate change. His report shows PolyMet used 20 year-old precipitation data when modeling the rainfall into the tailings basin, and neglected to include snowmelt. The report concludes that future rain events increase the risk of a catastrophic tailings dam failure upstream of Duluth and other communities along the St. Louis River.
